Sir John Betjeman was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster. He was born in 1906, near Highgate, London. His father was a cabinet maker. John was an only child, and so had a lonely childhood spent taking comfort from his teddy bear, Archibald, that later featured in his children's story, Archie and the Strict Baptists. Then Having attended his first schools in Highgate, John became a boarder at Dragon School, Oxford, Three years later, he went to Marlborough College, again as a boarder. Throughout John's childhood, his family went for holidays to Trebetherick in Cornwall, where his father owned a number of properties. These seemed to have been the happiest times for him, and are remembered in many of his poems. In 1925, he went to Magdalen College, Oxford. However, he did not complete his degree, having failed a Divinity exam. He became a teacher at Thorpe House School, Gerrard's Cross, before working as a private secretary. In 1930, He became an assistant editor of The Architectural Review. This was followed by his first book of poems, Mount Zion, which was published by an old Oxford friend, Edward James. Then his Four more volumes of poetry appeared before the publication of Collected Poems (in 1958). His later collections were High and Low (1966), A Nip in the Air (1974), Church Poems (1981), and Uncollected Poems (1982). Betjeman’s prose works included several guidebooks to English counties; like, First and Last Loves (1952), essays on places and buildings; The English Town in the Last Hundred Years (1956); and English Churches (1964; along with Basil Clarke). Lastly He was knighted in 1969, and in 1972 he succeeded C. Day-Lewis as poet laureate of Britain.
