Traversing the mighty Waikato, the Waikato River Bridge is not only an engineering marvel in its own right but also an ecologically sensitive design that is responsive to the surrounding environment.
A collaboration between HEB Construction, Hamilton City Council and the New Zealand Government, the bridge and surrounding transport network will serve as a key connection into Peacocke from Hillcrest and the eastern suburbs.
The four lane bridge, including dedicated bus lanes, spans 96m over the Waikato River and 180m in total length. The single Y-shaped pillar on the south bank and absence of piers in the river result in a design outcome that is ecologically sensitive on the native long-tailed bats and the surrounding environment, both during construction and when it is operational.
