On the 40th birthday of James Joyce on February 2, 1922, in Paris, Shakespeare and Company published Ulysses. It is usually considered one of the most important works of modernist fiction and even – some contend – the greatest novel of the twentieth century. In essence, it is a comic novel definitively employing innovative stream of consciousness techniques in combination with endlessly inventive stylistic experimentation.
