A recap of 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John:
1. This book is written as a poetic sermon.
2. All of the key ideas come directly from Jesus’ final speech in John 13-17.
3. John is reminding these believers of what they ALREADY know to be true.
4. He uses a clever technique called “amplification” to communicate these words:
a. He wants to convey essential beliefs about life and truth and love.
b. It’s a poetic technique using ‘cyclical repetition’ to reinforce his teaching,
and every time he does it, he comes from a different angle:
i. He uses Hyperbole and stark contrasts like: light/dark, love/hate,
good/evil.
ii. Similar to the prologue to the gospel of John.
iii. “LIGHT” followed by “LOVE” is the focus.
