Ive had plenty of people ask for this video so I threw together a quick look at what my setup has been for Steelhead season this year! If you couldn't tell, Im a pretty big Orvis fan. You can certainly find cheaper setups but with Orvis you are going to have the best materials and still for an affordable price with a great warranty. Might as well just buy once if you're going to buy at all! So here is how my rod is set up starting at the reel. Backing - Fly Line - Tapered Leader - Indicator at the top of the tapered leader - Barrel swivel at the end of the tapered leader - split shot on the leader end of the barrel swivel - 18 inches of tippet from barrel swivel to first fly - 12 inches tippet from first fly to second fly. People ask why I keep the indicator all the way at the top of the leader and this is because Jeff Blood (Steelhead Master) taught me that you dont need to ever adjust the indicator, just simply adjust the amount of split you are using. This way you only have one variable you are changing from drift to drift. If you aren't bumping bottom, add a little more split. If you are getting snagged, take some split off. It also allows for easier drifts because your fly line is less likely to drown on you.
