Chopin's etude Op.25, No.9 in G Flat Major. I recorded this piece back in 2001 (!) according to Chopin's own tempo indication. As the metronome was used in a metrical way (hence "metronome"), where the "meter" was formed by two ticks in stead of one, the tempo indication of 4th = 112 is, translated in our today's reading of a MM, 8th=112. The effect in this particular etude if the piece becomes one of the most optimistic, joyful, sunny pieces you can imagine. Perhaps not the picture the late romantic era wanted to paint on Chopin, but certainly closer to the man Chopin really was!
Chopin was extremely sensitive to exact playing in what he felt was the perfect tempo of his compositions. His metronome was never far from his piano, Carl Mikuli writes.
