(30 Jul 2017) Members of the Venezuelan opposition held a gathering in Caracas on Sunday, to protest the election of a new constitutional assembly.
The gathering, in the Altamira neighbourhood of the capital, escalated into clashes when national guard members confronted protesters who had set up barricades.
Protesters put caltrops on the road to puncture the tyres of guard members' motorbikes.
Meanwhile, government supporters voted in the election.
The large crowds were pictured on VTV, the government channel, as a sign of success.
The opposition has boycotted the vote saying it was only meant to consolidate power into the president's hands.
The boycott means that all of the 5,500 candidates running for the 545-seat assembly are in favour of Maduro's government.
