Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired defence minister Yoav Gallant, citing a "crisis of trust" over their differing views on managing Israel's ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza. Gallant, a former naval commando, had been a key figure in Netanyahu’s war cabinet since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of over 250 hostages. Tensions had been mounting for months, with Gallant advocating for a clear plan to end the conflict and bring home the hostages, while Netanyahu insisted the war could not stop until Hamas was completely defeated. Gallant’s firing sparked widespread protests in Israel, with demonstrators accusing Netanyahu of prioritizing politics over national security. Critics also voiced concerns about Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict, particularly amid increasing threats from Iran and Hezbollah. Gallant was replaced by former Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
