Well, here it is...another mini feature. This bass took over a year to arrive from Germany. Hope you enjoy!
This video is a short history/examination of Paul McCartney's Hofner 500/1 violin basses, which he famously used throughout his career with The Beatles. After years of saving, I finally had enough to purchase one myself – I ordered it through Thomann (directly from Germany), model "H500/1-62-0 Mersey." It took over a year to actually receive the bass, but I ended up paying less than I would have through American dealers (even with shipping and customs).
I absolutely love the instrument. The only thing I can say is that after a week, I noticed some wavy lines in the grain that only show up in a certain light. Nick Waas (of Hofner) let me know it's a unique spruce figuring often referred to as "bearclaw." As my buddy Greg Feo put it, "That's Hofner DNA!" I suppose if it ever gets stolen, the grain should make it easy to identify... 😉
P.S. Before you say it: yes, I realize "Taxman" was not played on a Hofner. However, I did this to illustrate you can get a pretty close sound. Very versatile!
