The biggest deleted scene from Return of the King involves Sauron appearing at the Black Gate. There are multiple versions, one with him in his angelic form and another physically appearing in armor, which contradicts his lore. In one version, he fights Aragorn sword to sword, with some shots replaced by an armored troll in the final cut. Storyboard images show Aragorn stabbing Sauron, but it has little effect until the Ring is destroyed, causing Sauron's form to explode. Ultimately, the final cut is preferred as it avoids the challenge of explaining Sauron's physical presence without the Ring.
