A lot of parents want to know how much water their toddler should be drinking. And really, it's about an overall volume, and a toddler should be drinking 2 to 3 cups of milk each day, and that's with meals. So in between, you can give your toddler sips of water, especially if you're going to be out in the hot sun, or if they're very active, then make sure that you encourage them to drink even more water. So there's not a set amount that they should drink per day. Really, what you should do is look for signs that they're well-hydrated. So if they're urinating frequently, their urine is light yellow to clear instead of an amber or apple juice color - if you notice that, then they need to drink more.
And the frequency of your child's stools can have something to do with their hydration status too. So, number 1, if a child has diarrhea because they're sick, then they're more likely to become dehydrated quickly, and you should encourage fluids. If your child is drinking less, not because they're sick, they don't have diarrhea, then you might notice that they have fewer bowel movements, and that they're harder, they're pebble-like, and by encouraging fluids, it can help with constipation.
In addition to the number of wet diapers you're changing, or the amount of times your toddler is going to the bathroom, and the number of stools your child is having, watch for signs of excessive fussiness, just not responding to you as usual, if they cry and they don't have tears, if you have a baby that has sunken soft spots on their head, or if their eyes seem sunken, or if their skin is really wrinkly - those are all signs of dehydration, and you should have them seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Another thing to watch out for if you've been out in the sun a lot, if you're child is excessively sleepy, or they seem just lethargic - that's another reason to have them checked out.
