• DESCRIPTION
The tops of the mountains on the Isle of Rum are home to tens of thousands of "trolls". Or at least that's what the Vikings thought were up there when they heard the strange noises emanating from the mountains at night. The truth of what lives up there is even more extraordinary.

Manx shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus). These seabirds, in the same taxonomic order as albatrosses, are pelagic, spending most of their time at sea. They over-winter on the Atlantic coast of Brazil and returning to the North Atlantic to breed between March and September. One third of the world's population breeds on the mountain tops of the Isle of Rum on the west coast of Scotland. They are a particular favourite of mine as they have a fascinating life cycle which I hope to explain in this video.

I'd like to thank NatureScot who manage the Isle of Rum as a National Nature Reserve and monitor the shearwaters. They kindly advised me and aided me in making this short film. I made sure not to disturb the shearwaters while I was there.

If you plan to visit Rum and are interested in shearwaters I strongly advise contacting the reserve warden. The mountains are inhospitable and the weather can be very wet, cold and changeable at any time of year.

• MOUNTAIN SAFETY Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion. And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!

• A word on DRONES I know how annoying it can be to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.
