The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all extra soft, fluffy things be kept out of a child's crib until about a year of age. So this includes bumper pads, pillows, extra blankets, and stuffed animals. But by a year of age, the risk of SIDS has significantly decreased, and babies are usually strong enough and healthy enough to have an extra pillow or blanket in their crib to make them more comfortable at night. However, if your child has any extenuating health history or any circumstances that might cause any complication, it would be best to talk to the pediatrician first.
