Around 1 billion people rely on fish as their main source of animal protein, while many others also gain nutritional benefit other aquatic foods such as seaweed, algae and shellfish. Meanwhile, 10%-12% of the world’s population rely on fish for their livelihoods. All of this is under considerable threat due to widespread overfishing and the uncertain impact of climate change. Strains on ocean food systems will increase as demand continues to grow.
