STORYLINE:
French police used tear gas to disperse people at the Place de la Nation in Paris on Monday, as tensions rose after thousands marched in one of the country's biggest May Day demonstrations in years.
Many gathered on rooftops as clashes between protesters and riot police in the city's eastern Place de la Nation district went on below.
Mobilised against French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent move to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, marchers were largely peaceful.
But groups of extremist protesters shattered windows of stores and banks in Paris, drawing tear gas from rows of riot police.
Organisers see pension reform as a threat to hard-fought worker rights, while Macron argues it's economically necessary as the population ages.
