Once king of the rails, the SD40-2 is now mainly used on locals, and rarely leads mainline trains. However on the BNSF, a handful of them are PTC equipped, and lead trains from time to time. These 40s seem to call Northtown Yard home, and can be found in the Twin Cities area.
We'll start off just after day break at Anoka as we wait for the NTWMIN with BNSF 1687, an SD40-2 still in Burlington Northern green, leading with an SD60M. Before the 1687 shows up, Amtrak passes and the rising sun shines off of the stainless steel cars. Shortly after the Empire Builder clears, the headlights of from the classic EMD come into sight. Giving it all it has, the exhaust looked and sounded great with the rising sun. After this, we'll give chase all the way to Rice before calling it a day. It was great to see, and hear these two classic EMDs stretching their legs, and running out on the main.
