The brand's superb 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine powers the sDrive30i, producing more torque and feeling more powerful than its 255 horsepower. The M40i variant has a turbocharged inline-six engine with 382 horsepower for added power. When aroused, it is extremely refined, sleek, and fierce. An eight-speed automatic transmission with manual and sport settings is standard on the Z4. Additionally standard are steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. One of the greatest automatics available is the eight-speed, which operates smoothly and responds quickly. The Handschalter (or "hand shift" in German) package, which comes with a six-speed manual, stiffer anti-roll bars, a retuned adaptive suspension system, and special, larger rims and tires, is now available for the more potent six-cylinder variant.


You might be surprised to learn that the Z4 is among the most fuel-efficient sports cars in its class, considering its impressive performance. The EPA rates the Z4 sDrive30i's fuel efficiency as 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The Z4 M40i's fuel efficiency is marginally worse at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the interstate due to its significantly higher horsepower.
