Hylio, an Austin-based drone company, has developed a large, fully autonomous drone, the AG 272, which is used to distribute nutrients and manage pests and diseases in crops. The drone, which can carry a payload of two hundred pounds or around 18 gallons of liquid, is designed to replace traditional crop dusting planes and tractors, offering increased precision and safety. It's capable of following a set pattern over a field to ensure thorough coverage. The drone's nozzles atomize the liquid down to a fine mist of 250 to 300 microns for better penetration into the crops. While the drone currently costs $80,000, this is still only one-fifth of the cost of traditional crop-dusting methods. The drone can operate for about 15 minutes with a full payload, and the technology is expected to evolve to be more automated and capable of refueling and recharging itself.
