What is a botched rhinoplasty? What is secondary rhinoplasty?
'Botched' refers to situations where the primary surgery didn't go as intended. This term is commonly used in cosmetic surgery.
The question people usually have is, "what are the common reasons for botched rhinoplasty?", "When is the right time to do a secondary rhinoplasty?"
In this video, Dr. Aniketh Venkataram, from Venkat Center, explains how surgery can go wrong with examples like
*appearance not as desired,
*hump even after surgery,
*the nose is collapsed or widely twisted and deviated after the first surgery.
There can be functional problems as well where the nose looks fine from outside, but the patient is not able to breathe properly.
The nose feels blocked, you have pain or a continuous discharge.
These are some of the noted reasons for secondary rhinoplasty.
(Jump to 1:55) Reasons for secondary rhinoplasty?
Secondary rhinoplasty is a type of corrective surgery to improve the results of primary surgery done on a patient.
Reason 1: If your surgery was performed by an untrained surgeon, you could be risking a secondary rhinoplasty.
Reason 2: If there are complications after the first rhinoplasty, (because the surgery was not done correctly), then the ultimate result will be difficult to attain.
Reason 3: Injury happened after the first rhinoplasty
Reason 4: Rare complications found inside the nose which were not predicted before the surgery. It could hinder the original surgical plan.
(Jump to 3:23) How to make sure you have good results?
For the best results, it is important to find a trained Plastic/ENT surgeon.
At Venkat Center, you will be treated under Dr. Aniketh (Plastic surgeon) and Dr. Deeksha (ENT surgeon)
(Jump to 4:26) Why is secondary rhinoplasty tougher than the first rhinoplasty?
Reason 1: There will be a lot of scarring after the first rhinoplasty. Dissection will be difficult in secondary rhinoplasty.
Reason 2: Oftentimes, there won't be a good record of what was done in primary surgery that makes pre-planning difficult for secondary rhinoplasty.
Reason 3: After the first surgery, the strength of the nose weakens. So, it is important to re-strengthen the nose by using cartilage. Many times it is difficult to use cartilage as there is a need to take cartilage from some other part of the body like the ears and the rib. This makes surgery more difficult.
Reason 4: Possibilities of having functional disorders after primary surgery that could create difficulties in secondary rhinoplasty.
(Jump to 6:45) When is the time to do a secondary rhinoplasty?
Dr. Aniketh explains here that it is important to wait for at least 9 months or preferably a year for secondary rhinoplasty. The main reason behind it is nose should completely recover from the first surgery and then do secondary rhinoplasty to have the best success because secondary surgery should be the last surgery.
