PGG Wrightson Grain is one of the largest private investors in cereal cultivar research in New Zealand. We have a proven record in plant breeding, overseas cultivar evaluation and agronomy programmes, all of which are focused on the development of best management practices for the benefit of growers and end users.
Our agronomy programme involves both in-house plant breeding, with a focus on milling wheat plus targeted feed wheat and triticale breeding. This runs in parallel with evaluating overseas-bred wheat, barley, triticale, ryecorn and linseed. We have recently started a programme funded by the New Zealand flour miller’s association for soft milling wheat that targets speciality products including sauce mixes, wafers and noodles as well as traditional products such as biscuits and cakes.
Our staff are located at Kimihia Research Centre at Lincoln where our Research & Development programmes are coordinated from. Most of the breeding and evaluation activity is located on large scale arable farms throughout Canterbury.
Overall, this Research & Development activity requires a major investment that would not be possible without the continued support from farmers through the procurement of grain and purchasing certified cereal seed.
