STORYLINE:
Indonesia is welcome to do business with Taiwan but should not open diplomatic links with the self-ruled island, Chinese legislature chairman Li Peng was quoted as saying Monday.
Li, who is in Jakarta as part of a Southeast Asian tour, made the remarks in a meeting with the speaker of Indonesia's highest legislative assembly, Amien Rais. Rais said Li urged Indonesia to remain firm on its "one China" policy.
Taiwan has been separate from the mainland since 1949, but the communist Beijing government claims the island as part of its territory.
China asks foreign governments to adopt a "one China" policy by refraining from any contact with Taiwan that appears to treat it as a sovereign government.
Last month, Taiwan Vice President Annette Lu met Indonesia's labour and environment ministers on the tourist island of Bali, sparking diplomatic protests from China.
Jakarta later stated it had not invited Lu and had no plans to open diplomatic links with the island.
