How to do Backward Crossovers - Figure Skating Techniques
There are a lot of opinions and Figure skating techniques on how to do backward crossovers correctly. In this video, Olympic and World Figure Skating Coach, Igor Lukanin, explains his view on the most efficient way of executing backward crossovers. In Igor Lukanin's opinion, this technique will allow you to achieve speed and flow across the ice while maintaining aesthetically pleasing posture all with minimal effort.
Preparing for a backward crossover, you need to place your weight over the pushing foot, pre-bend, twist inside of the circle and looking in the direction you are traveling start the push with your standing leg.
As this is done, bend your free leg sending your free foot inside of the circle, while pushing slightly out of the knee like a breath.
As your pushing leg extends at the end of the push, the new foot will take the ice on the outside edge, inside the circle you are traveling on.
Once your new standing leg is established, begin pushing that leg under the outside leg, keeping your weight over the pushing leg.
The push completes with the extension of the pushing leg being crossed under.
