In October 2024 I visited the island of Cyprus, and took a daytrip to the Turkish side of the island, to see the abandoned city of Varosha/ Famagusta, that have been abandoned since the turkish invasion of the northern part of Cyprus in 1974.
Akward silence all over town, with only a few people talking.
I was told, that the city was untouched since 1974, but that was not true. The city is stripped of everything that is worth anything. There were supposed to be old original Toyota cars in the dealership, but there where not. Alle the hotels look completely empty, not even doors or windows.
Even though it was still a big experience and I reccomend a visit to the town, if you like abandoned places. It is not the entire town that is open, and there are guards almost everywhere that guides you around.
