Jamie Villanueva and his friend Barbara found themselves huddled together on the floor of their hotel room at 1am, facing a relentless onslaught from Hurricane Otis when it struck the coastal city of Acapulco, Mexico, on Wednesday.

As daylight broke, the extent of the destruction became evident. ‘You’re kidding. Acapulco has been destroyed,’ Jamie remarked as he filmed the post-storm chaos from the 21st floor of the Solar Ocean hotel.

His footage showed hotels wrecked by Otis, ceilings and walls ripped open, windows shattered and cars partly submerged in floodwaters as the rare Category 5 storm barreled ashore in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero.
