Previously, I've shown how I carry a canoe or kayak on the side of my Sprinter van. Now, you can learn how to carry a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) securely strapped to the side of your camper van using an easy-to-build rack system. This paddle board rack is also modular and easy to adjust.
▼ WHERE TO BUY PARTS
▶ L Track Angled Surface Mount - Steadymate 15546 Series - [ Ссылка ] - I have purchased several different varieties of L track, and this is hands down the most heavy-duty L Track that I have found. It appears to be of similar quality and strength as an airline track, used to hold seats and cargo down in airplanes. At the time I bought this, in 2017, it cost $50 per 8ft piece on Amazon. That was a great deal, but they don't always have it in stock there.
This looks like the same product that was sold on Amazon: [ Ссылка ]
▶ ALTERNATE SOURCE L Track Angled Surface Mount - [ Ссылка ] - If the above L track is not available, this one appears very similar
▶ 1/4-20 Flat Head Stainless Steel Screws -
▶ 1/4-20 Plus Nuts - These are installed in the sheet metal to create screw threads for attaching the l-track to the side of the van
▶ L Track Double Stud Fitting with Bolt Thread - [ Ссылка ] - These fittings are screwed to the crossbars and used to attach the crossbars to the rails
▶ L Track Double Stud Fitting with Large Opening - [ Ссылка ] - These fittings are used for tie-down strap hooks and the pivot at the base of the canoe rack.
▶ ¾ inch EMT conduit
▶ Maker Pipe T CONNECTOR - [ Ссылка ]
▶ Heavy Duty 2" Retractable Ratcheting Tie-Down Strap
▶ Retractable Ratcheting Tie-Down Strap - [ Ссылка ]
▼ DESCRIPTION CONTINUED
Ironically, the ginormous size of the Yellow Submarine (2006 Mercedes Sprinter) and other tall #vanlife vans makes it difficult to transport canoes and kayaks on the outside without increasing the already tall clearance issues. Even if I were able to get the canoe ontop of my van, there are some low bridges on the way to the lake that I would not be able to clear and would need to take a detour.
I had to devise a solution for mounting the canoe in a position that takes advantage of the curvature of the side and roof to minimize additional height and width.
The first step was to install L-Track on the side of the van, creating side rack rails to which I can attach accessories like cross bars.
▼ HOW TO LOCK PADDLEBOARD, SURFBOARD, KAYAK TO PREVENT THEFT
I was also concerned to find a solution for locking it up to avoid theft. I'm going to try using a pair of these Master Lock adjustable cable locks. [ Ссылка ]
By using one at both narrower ends where the crossbars are attached, then it should be impossible to slide out the board without cutting the cable locks. The standard length of this cable is 6ft, which may not be long enough, but they also sell an 8ft length which should work fine.
There are several stainless steel cable reinforced strap solutions designed for kayaks and boards, but the quality of those seems questionable. Here's an example of one. The stainless steel cable reinforced strap looks good quality, but the lock seems cheap and according to reviews is easy to break. [ Ссылка ]
There's also this product for locking up paddles: [ Ссылка ] Although I find those easy to store in the van.
Instead of using the quick release solutions for attaching the crossbars to the L track, you can use bolt-on attachments that would make it more difficult to remove the crossbars: [ Ссылка ]
All of the solutions I've seen would deter casual theft, but not someone who is determined with the right tools. The Master Lock adjustable cable locks are the strongest solution.
