Thousands gathered on Sept. 6 to celebrate the upcoming opening of the new UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, with a 5K Hard Hat Walk and a Lights On Festival that culminated in a multi-color light show illuminating the windows of the three hospitals opening on Feb. 1, 2015: UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital and UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell on the Emmy-award winning comedy "Modern Family" kicked off the countdown. He was joined on stage by, from left to right, UCSF Medical Center CEO Mark Laret, San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu, UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds, acclaimed local musician Michael Franti, San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, San Francisco Police Chief Gregory Suhr, and Olympic gold medal figure skating champion Kristi Yamaguchi.
