Female Sumatran orangutan Dana and her little girl Keajaiban are no strangers to cameras, or #YouTube. Millions of people have watched Kea's birth, and learned the story of Dana's 'miracle' conception and delivery, after she was deemed infertile. This time we gave her the camera (an a specially constructed housing), and got an idea what it all looks like from her perspective.
Whilst Dana walks on frosty ground, and obviously lives in captivity, the view is likely much better for her than many of her wild relatives. They mostly see fire, cleared forest, rows and rows of palm oil monoculture, and, if they are mothers, risk being separated from their babies if captured by those illegally felling her remaining patch of forest. None of it is ideal... but there are people out there (www.socp.org) attempting to remedy the situation, and we all have to work together. Staff training, research, enclosure design and funds kindly donated by visitors are all shared between Durrell and SOCP in an attempt to do what we can for Dana and Kea's kind.
