The barn owl cam is part of a citizen science study led by the GAIA Project, WBAIS and the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) and funded by the USA Embassy in Israel, a private donor and the GAIA Project. The wild barn owl pair breeds in a nest box we built and added on the middle school. This is the second year in a row the owl pair has bred at the school. The wild barn owls breed in a nest box that we added as past of our biological pest control of of rodents in agriculture where they hunt rodent pests in the agricultural field next to the school. מצלמת התנשמות היא חלק מפרוייקט מדע אזרחי, אותו מובילים קבוצת פרוויקט גאיה, ביה"ס האמריקאי וקבוצת המחקר של ד"ר מוטי צ'רטר לחקר אקולוגית חיות-הבר (מכון שמיר למחקר והחוג לגיאוגרפיה ולימודי סביבה באוניברסיטת חיפה). הפרוייקט ממומן ע"י שגרירות ארה"ב בישראל, תורם פרטי ופרוייקט גאיה . כחלק מפרוייקט הדברה ביולוגית של מכרסמים באמצעות תנשמות אנו בונים תיבות קינון ייעודיות המותקנות בשטחי חקלאות ובסמוך להם. תיבה כזו הותקנה גם בבית-ספר תיכון הנמצא בסמוך לשדות חקלאיים ולשמחתנו, זו השנה השניה ברציפות שהתיבה מאוכלסת ע"י זוג תנשמות. לאורך עונת הקינון, זוג התנשמות והגוזלים ניזונים מציד של מכרסמים מזיקים בשדות החקלאות הסמוכים. ניתן להבחין בין הזוויגים כאשר הזכר בהיר/לבן יותר ואילו הנקבה חומה/כהה יותר
