STORYLINE:
Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud warned on Wednesday that it would be impossible to disarm the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which receives arms from Iran, by force.
"The Hezbollah resistance's weapons are the only weapons the Arab opponents of Israel have. Be assured that no one can disarm the resistance, especially by force," he said.
Lahoud made his remarks to reporters in Beirut ahead of a twice-delayed meeting of the Lebanese Cabinet, two members of which are also Hezbollah members.
Lahoud's comments gave the strongest indication yet that the guerrillas will not disarm in the region or withdraw, but rather melt into the local population and hide their weapons.
The meeting approved a plan to deploy the Lebanese army into southern Lebanon south of the Litani River, starting on Thursday.
The cabinet however was expected to have skirted the issue of Hezbollah's arsenal - a key requirement of the UN brokered ceasefire.
