Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has announced his support for the resentencing of the Menendez brothers in their murder case. The brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms without the possibility of parole. The case began on August 20, 1989, when Lyle and Erik Menendez fatally shot their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. The defense argued that the brothers acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father.
The Menendez brothers' case gained attention with the release of the Netflix drama "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" and the Netflix documentary "The Menendez Brothers." Nearly two dozen of the brothers' relatives have united at a news conference to push for their resentencing. They believe that their continued incarceration serves no rehabilitative purpose and that the brothers "deserve a chance to heal, and our family deserves a chance to heal with them."
