The decision to undergo spine surgery is not one to be taken lightly. The least invasive surgery is no surgery at all, and I work hard to help patients avoid an operation whenever possible.
Initial treatment steps often include physical therapy and judicious use of non-narcotic medications. If pain persists, injections can be a helpful next step, both in terms of providing relief and pinpointing the source of symptoms. But if these strategies fail to sufficiently alleviate symptoms, it may be worth considering surgery.
Patients don’t necessarily need to be writhing in pain to justify an operation… it’s a matter of whether their condition consistently impacts their quality of life and ability to participate in the activities they enjoy. If this is the case, consulting with a spine surgeon could be beneficial.
My practice is 100% minimally invasive, which means several things to me. The first is the philosophy of avoiding surgery if at all possible. The second is a conservative outlook, reserving surgical care for those likely to benefit from it and cautioning others against it. This conservatism also involves honing in on the exact cause of symptoms in order to craft the most focused intervention possible. Finally, I utilize a set of minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques that allow me to perform spine surgery through tiny incisions while preserving the surrounding soft tissues. This allows for dramatic pain relief and rapid recovery.
