403b plans are typically setup as pretax accounts and are pitched as a tax saving vehicle since the contributions help to lower your taxes today. However, you will eventually have to pay taxes on that money plus all of its growth in retirement. Your taxes in retirement isn't guaranteed to be lower, especially if you have a pension and social security.
