There is no denying that Gus Van Sant is a living legend of US cinema. Van Sant emerged in the 1980s as a trailblazer of the young auteur cinema movement, and although his films often represent homosexual relationships, they do not politicise or overtly thematise them. His empathy for characters living on the fringes of society has resulted in a body of work committed to themes of unrequited love, alienation and non-normative concepts of family. Van Sant shares insights about his latest, "Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot" (2018 Competition), as well as about his experiences working between art house and big budgets and what it means to be one of the most influential outsiders in indie film today.
