The clothing has been one of the physical aspects that represent Filipinos for over and even continues to be a form of formal traditional wear even to this very day. With some establishments even offering custom-made barong Tagalog products for special occasions, there is no denying that it is the Philippines’ traditional costume and formal wear for men.
However, seeing how long the barong has been around for years, how did this local outfit still have an influential impact not only on locals but also on foreigners who fancy them?
Here is how the barong became the staple of Filipinos and its significant influence within and outside the country.

Brief History of the:
Barong Tagalog originates from the Tagalog word baro, meaning “shirt” or “clothing”, hence why the full name is translated to literally “Tagalog clothing”.
The traditional formal wear dates back to the pre-colonial era in the Philippines, where the original design consists of a double sleeve-doublet, with color representing the wearers’ social status.
It is believed that during this time, the Spanish colonizers forced the natives to redesign their outfits into transparent upper garments to show that the locals were not hiding any weapons and distinguishing them from the ruling class then.
Despite its arguable influence on design, this didn’t deter the favor of the barong as the design has improved and changed over time, with the coloration preference changing to lighter colors.
The barong Tagalog experienced a significant decline in the American colonial era as suits and tuxedos replaced it. It was however brought back to the trend as notable barong Tagalogs have become popular by President Ramon Magsaysay.
During his inauguration, he deliberately wore a barong; other Philippine presidents soon followed this. Soon, within the 1960s, the barong regained its status as the Philippines’ “formal wear”.
After Marcos’ declaration, the formal wear was made compulsory as official attire for employees in both government and private sectors.

The Growing Influence of Barong:
Barongs have experienced a significant rise in influence towards locals and foreigners alike over recent years. From its beginning as a traditional clothing, it has evolved into the symbol of the nation’s identity and fashion statement.
One of the growing influences is attributed to the increased promotion of preserving Filipino culture, which led to the resurgence of certain traditional factors, including using barong as a formal wear.
That said, barong has become the clothing of this current age, where younger generations wear barong on formal occasions to show their sense of class and appreciation of their culture and heritage.
Furthermore, modern designers have incorporated new styles and elements into traditional designs, making them more sleek and appealing to a wider audience. It adds to the growing popularity of custom-made barong tagalogs in the fashion industry.
