How To Grow Broad Beans - Starting Off | Easy, MASSIVE Plants and Delicious!
Broad beans or fava beans are a hardy vegetable which can tolerate some frost.
My allotment is in climate zone 9 and only rarely dips below -2C in winter. Broad beans are great to sow in autumn as they'll develop a deep root system and lie dormant until spring, when they grow into large flowering plants. This head start results in earlier and often more substantial harvests than from spring sowings.
In this video, I start by showing you the two varieties that I'll be growing this year:

Then I get my pumpkin bed cleared out, composted and sow the beans ready to grow. The best part about growing autumn broad beans is that they can be grown in a bed that isn't being used over winter. They also act as a green manure, so once the beans are harvested in early summer the plants can be dug into the soil and fertilise it ready for the next plant to be put in.
