Hi, everyone. Aidan here with etrailer. Now in my time here at etrailer I've helped a lot of people, both friends, family, and neighbors, pick out bike racks and find the right fit for them. And one of the most important things for me, when picking out a bike rack, or recommending one to someone, is the longevity of it. How long is it going to last Because the last thing I would want is to purchase a rack and six months, a year, down the road it starts to fail on me and not perform as good as the day I unboxed it. It's an investment and I want it to last, especially when it comes to premium bike racks like the Kuat Piston Pro X.
It's gonna be a really nice rack with a ton of premium and convenient features. But how does it hold up We've had this particular rack down in the shop for well over a year now. I've seen it tested on a variety of different cars, and I've used it on my own truck with my own bike quite a bit as well. And I've got a lot of thoughts to share of what it's like living with it, and we can talk about how it's held up to all the use and abuse that we've put it through here at etrailer. Let's get started.
First thing out of the gate is, for me, the looks of this rack. It's hard to remind myself that we've had this down the shop for so long, because it looks nearly new. This has a really high quality gray powder coat over an all-aluminum build, so you're already gonna be getting really good rust resistance by not having steel on here, but that powder coat over the top has given this a nice sleek look, and it's held up to any scratches or dings that we've put on it. Any areas where it has maybe chipped away, again, you don't see rust or corrosion underneath, because there's no steel involved. And for the pistons, one of the integral parts of this rack and one of the big points of movement, they've got that kashima coating on them, and they continue to operate very smoothly, and they continue to be very responsive, not showing any signs of dirt or debris getting caught in them, which is really good.
One of the other critical functions of this rack is that tilting feature. It's operated by a pedal near the front tray. And when pulling that, the lever is extremely smooth, really no signs of wear or aging there. The rack still tilts away and hits its stop pretty smoothly, and of course allows you to get to your back hatch, or at least, in my case, to my truck, somewhat easier access into my bed, even though it doesn't clear fully with my vehicle, it's got a really aggressive tilt. So really any hatchback or SUV, you'll be just fine having hatch access in the back when it's tilted away with your bikes loaded.
The bikes remain very stable on here, and when I go to push it back up and grab it by a nice stable point, that pedal locks in on the first try every time. It doesn't ever skip on us, and we never have to really hunt for that latch to reengage. Unlike some of their other premium racks, Kuat opted to do a non-integrated cable lock with the Piston Pro X here. I'm not totally displeased with that decision. Obviously, having it integrated into the trays makes it very convenient, 'cause you don't have to worry about forgetting it. But integrated cable locks are often prone to jamming up and getting stuck, and oftentimes aren't very long and usable, whereas the cable lock they provide with the Piston here, it's extremely long, so it's no problem to feed it through both bike frames and tires or wheels. And when you go to unlock it, the lock is in a very convenient spot just on the top of the tray here, so you never have to worry about it being out of reach, and it's very smooth to just click that cable into place, or release it. Even though there's no dust cover on the lock core there, we've never had any issues with it seizing up on us, and it continues to be a very easy to use portion of the rack, keeping your bike safe when you're not around. But the thing you probably wanna know most is how it actually handles with your bike. And there's a few things that we've come to find out after using this for an extended period of time. More for if you're using it with two bikes all the time. Admittedly, when I use this rack, I've almost always just got my one mountain bike on here, this guy in the front, but today I've got this bike from the shop loaded up, because my wife's gonna be using it when we go on vacation next week. And when yo
