The original version of “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on October 3rd, 2022. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the released version from Rockwell’s album of the same name in 1984, it has been revealed that “Somebody’s Watching Me” was initially written in 1981 after seeing John Landis’ film An American Werewolf In London. It was during a session with Rick James and Berry Gordy’s son Kennedy, better known as Rockwell, for his debut album of the same name. It was also recorded as far back as 1983 after wrapping up the short film for Thriller, hence the lyrics borrowed from the Starlight demo. It’s believed that it was considered to be released as a B-Side for the Thriller single in some countries, or possibly add it to a re-release in the future for the album.
He began working further on this version in October of 1983 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos with Joe Kehr, Rick James, Rockwell, Jeffrey Perez, and members of The Rag Tag Band. While the song runs around 5 minutes, the full-length version is over 8 minutes long, with more verses from Rick James and guest vocals from Joe Kehr. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album or single.
During one of the sessions for the song, Joe brought multiple musicians and friends, half of whom would later make up to be Michael’s backing band ‘The Rag Tag Band’; Sarah Greim, aka Syradelic, for guitar. Jo’Hari “Jo” Payne for bass guitar. E. Phillinganes & Dr. Erkka on keyboards, organs and synthesizers. Dean “Suitorfoot” Moffit Jr. for drums. Barron St. Massey & Eric L. Hayes for the horn arrangements. It’s said that this song was considered a guide track for Rockwell, although he chose to evolve it into his own.
While they all liked this version, Michael felt that it was a bit too on the nose of Thriller, as well as not approving Rick’s suggestive lyrics in the extended version, nor his ‘antics’ in the studio. So ultimately, this version was shelved. Michael would quickly give the song to Rockwell, in which he and his own producers reworked the song but kept Michael’s vocals for the chorus. It would go on to be a commercial hit in 1984, while Michael’s version ended up being put into the vault. Rockwell‘s version would end up on Michael’s “Scream” compilation album in 2017.
