(13 Aug 2020) Joe Biden is calling for a nationwide mask mandate, citing experts' predictions that it could save 40,000 lives over the next three months.
"Wearing the mask is less about you contracting the virus," Biden said during an event in Wilmington, Delaware. "it's about preventing other people from getting sick."
The Democratic nominee also responded to those who push back against such mandates.
"Protect your fellow citizens. Step up, do the right thing," he said.
Biden and running mate California Sen. Kamala Harris spoke briefly in the same Wilmington, Delaware hotel ballroom where they held their first virtual fundraiser after appearing together as running mates for the first time Wednesday.
Harris said Biden's call is "what real leadership looks like."
"The thing about Joe that the American people know is that his role of leadership in our country has always been about doing what's best for the people of our country," she said.
Before their remarks, they were briefed by public health and economic experts on the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused the deaths of more than 166,000 Americans and plunged the global economy into the worst economic recession since World War II.
