STORYLINE:
There was panic on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Sunday, as Israel's heavy bombardment of the Gaza Strip came close to its border with Egypt.
Pictures released on Monday showed ambulances driving away from the border and deeper into Egypt as plumes of smoke dotted the horizon and the sound of bombs boomed.
The ambulances had been waiting at the Rafah crossing to collect injured Gazans.
Israel widened its deadliest-ever air offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers on Sunday, pounding purported smuggling tunnels under the border with Egypt, and a central prison.
Israel sent more tanks and artillery towards its border with Gaza and approved a reserves call-up for a possible ground invasion.
Also on Sunday, crowds of Gazans had breached the border wall with Egypt, in an apparent attempt to escape the chaos.
Egyptian forces, some firing in the air, tried to push them back into Gaza and an official said one border guard was killed.
