Kendrick Lamar's new album GNX just dropped, and it's already shaking things up in the rap world like hardly any other project has before. It's not really shocking that this record, showcasing a fierce side of Kendrick Lamar after being in the midst of the biggest battle the genre has ever faced, is stirring up mixed reactions, especially among other rappers. What is surprising, though, is that less than 24 hours after the project was released, in the dead of night, one of the biggest rappers out there, who’s had some growing tension with Kendrick since the Super Bowl halftime show was announced, finally decided to address Kendrick officially.
The intro track of this project, "Whacked Out Murals," features Kendrick rapping about some of his biggest haters and enemies throughout his career. So, he had to talk about Lil Wayne. Even though Wayne is one of his idols, Kendrick feels like he kind of let him down by blocking him from performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans, which is his hometown.
Once Wayne's name came up on this album, he jumped on social media to say, “Man, WTF?” Do I really? I'm just hanging out, and they still want to come after me. We shouldn't confuse kindness with weakness. Please, let this giant rest. I’m asking you all. Honestly, nobody really wants to see things get wrecked—not even me—but I’ll take action if pushed.”
