The theme of cantata Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig - recorded here for All of Bach with Shunske Sato on the occasion of his farewell as artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society – is clear from the beginning: life is uncertain, fleeting and futile. Bach communicates this theme musically from the virtuoso opening chorus to the closing chorale, lasting barely one minute, which looks the finiteness of the world straight in the eye.
