Two killed as riot clashes escalate
Two people were killed and another injured in Istanbul on Tuesday (14/3) when a car exploded after being hit by petrol bombs. The car exploded on the street which has been the focus of two days of rioting in the Turkish capital. Earlier, clashes between police and demonstrators broke out in Ankara following the Istanbul disturbances. Turkish police were attempting to break up a demonstration of about three and a half thousand people protesting over the Istanbul riot in which at least fifteen people died. Most of the dead were Muslim Alawites. The clashes in Ankara erupted when police closed roads around the parliament to stop demonstrators approaching. Seventeen protestors and thirteen police were injured. The demonstration was hurriedly organised by Democracy Platform, a grouping of human rights associations, trade unionists and professionals.
