Motorway A2 is a Dutch motorway that connects the capital of the country (Amsterdam) with the southeast. The route runs via Utrecht, 's-Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven to Maastricht, capital of the province of South Limburg. With a length of 217 kilometers, the A2 is the second longest motorway in the Netherlands. Only motorway A7 (Amsterdam - Groningen) is slightly longer at 241 kilometers. In this video series we see the entire A2 in a southeasterly direction. The images were recorded on a Saturday evening after 7 p.m. That is the time when the maximum speed on most motorways increases from 100 to 130 km/h.
The video starts on the Rijnstraat in Amsterdam, near the former beginning/end of the A2. This part of the former A2 is now known as Amsterdam city route S110. At the Amstel junction, the S110 merges into the A2. From the Holendrecht junction to Utrecht, the A2 consists of 2x5 lanes. Fun fact: between Vinkeveen and Breukelen, there was a railway crossing in the motorway until 1987.
At Maarssen, the motorway is split into a main and parallel lane. We pass Utrecht, the capital of the province with the same name. Part of the motorway is a 1650-metre-long tunnel (Leidsche Rijn tunnel) that was taken into use in 2012. After Utrecht, we reach the Oudenrijn junction, one of the busiest junctions in the Netherlands.
After Utrecht, we continue south. We pass Nieuwegein, one of the suburbs of Utrecht. After the Jan Blankenbrug, a bridge over the Lek, one of the 'big' rivers in the Netherlands, we reach the Everdingen junction where traffic can turn off onto the A27 in a south-westerly direction. The video ends a few kilometres further at the Bisde rest area to clean the windscreen.
==================================
