Setting: Community Health Center
Nurse- You see a parent inquiring about MMR vaccines. Their kids have not yet received the MMR vaccine, which is recommended for all children in your country. You want to advise the mother about the benefits and safety of the MMR vaccine and address any concerns she may have.
Task
• Find out the reason for his/her visit. Find out what they know about the vaccine.
• Explain what MMR vaccine is (protect from three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella.) and explain the inportance of the vaccine (reduces risk caused due the diseases like fever, rash, swelling of the glands; severe complications like deafness, brain damage, or death, etc.)
• Outline the vaccine schedule ( given in two doses: first dose - 4 to 6 years old, and the second - 12 to 15 years old). Ask parent if he/she has any questions or worries about the MMR vaccine.
• Reassure the mother about MMR (no scientific evidence of autism or any other disorder, in use for decades, safe and effective, etc.). Describe the common side effects of MMR vaccine ( mild and temporary fever, rash, or soreness at injection site and do not require any treatment, etc.)
• Reassure about pain ( mild discomfort, medicine for pain relief)
• Establish parents willingness to have their children vaccinated.
