For those of you who feed the birds, 2022 is an irruption year for Evening Grosbeaks, purple finches, and a few others. Evening Grosbeaks seem to be the largest population to irrupt based on recent sightings. The cone crop in the boreal forest is poor this year so many birds are flying south (irrupting) to find food. They like sunflower and safflower but need a substantial perch so tray and hopper feeders work best for them. Evening Grosbeaks have yellow foreheads, belly and rump plus black and white wings and tail. The duller colored ones are female. They are about the size of a cardinal. Their population is declining so it’s great to see these birds around our area! 😃
