SZA - The Making of 'Shirt' (Vevo Footnotes)
"Dangerously chill vibe" - that's how SZA describes the tone of the rather incredible "Shirt" video. The dangerous part is obvious; the singer and LaKeith Stanfield go on a murder spree with guns and guts dominating the visuals. The chill part is a gorgeous balance to the mayhem; these two seem to take everything in stride. "Shirt" is the third time director Dave Meyers has shot with the singer. Both "Drew Barrymore" and "All Of The Stars" have enhanced their creative relationship. Meyers says that "SZA is a fan of 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Jackie Brown.' We built a SZA-fied version of an offbeat underworld, and mixed in some symbolism around mental 'burdens' and cleansing to give the video a sense of spirituality to contrast the violence." Each time a body drops, the singer notches another colored mark on her wrist to signal the eradication of another burden. Heavy stuff, and it pairs perfect with the cool temperament of the R&B groove. The singer has plenty to say in our exclusive interviews, as does Meyers. Jump into see what the clown, the preacher and the other represent.
