I had a great discussion with Professor Richard Haier, an American psychologist who studies the neural basis of human intelligence and cognition. Professor Haier and I talked about a range of topics, including: intelligence, its biological basis, the neural underpinnings of intelligence, whether intelligence is largely biological, and how genetic research has contributed to our understanding of intelligence. We also discussed the interplay between genetics and environment in determining intelligence, the implications of the finding that environmental influences on intelligence decrease with age while genetic influences increase, and the ethical concerns surrounding intelligence. Additionally, we covered the advancement of neuroscience techniques like brain imaging, the potential for predicting intelligence from brain images, and the differences between psychometric and chronometric testing of intelligence, including why chronometric testing might be valuable. Other topics included the concept of brain efficiency, the discovery of brain networks and regions, enhancing intelligence through neuroscience developments, savant abilities, general intelligence, working memory, the Parieto-frontal Integration Theory, the relationship between creativity and intelligence, brain development, and how to nurture intellectual potential. We also explored brain efficiency patterns, cognitive tasks, white matter, the concept of 'neuro-poverty,' and enhancing cognitive abilities through interventions like brain stimulation or drugs.
