Shakespeare's Globe - standing places, hierarchy & history ▶️ It's so funny how times change. In the past, people did not have much entertainment. They didn't have phones, Internet, Netflix, cinemas, or the opportunity to drive/ride for 30 min just to see a friend and get a coffee.

Instead, they had theater, animal fights, and executions. Yes, executions were a kind of entertainment... For the crowd of course 👀

In places like the theater, you could see how wealthy/poor people are.

Take Shakespeare's Globe for example. A theater that has a standing area.

STANDING = POOR 🤧
Sitting = rich 🪙
Sitting With a cushion = 🪙🪙
Sitting in a Private room = 🪙🪙🪙

The standing area in the theater is not covered, so when it rained and snowed, people got wet.
Also, hygiene was an issue back then, so the standing area had been quite smelly.
Some people were getting a shower per year and that was considered OK.
Standing in that area was one way diseases were passed on.

Nowadays hygiene is at a different level.

It's funny how times change.
