DIY ESR Meter for testing electrolytic capacitors.
In this video I try to explain how you can design your own ESR meter / ESR tester. The PSoC 4 chip I used was only used to generate 100kHz square wave and I also used it's internal operational amplifier, both of which could have been done with generic parts like 555 timer and rail-to-rail operational amplifier.
Turn-ratio of transformer should be such that the input signal from what ever oscillator you use will be transformed to 100-200mV or so peak-to-peak.
Amplifier's amplification should be adjusted to make the output voltage of this whole circuit just slightly lower than the higher end of the measuring devices (DMM, ADC, panel meter) measuring range, when measured capacitor is replaced with short circuit. That allows effective use of whole measuring range.
This wasn't made to measure exact ESR value, but to check if capacitor's ESR is in the right ballpark. 0.1Ohm, 1Ohm and 10Ohm resistors were used to check the output voltage that represents each of those resistances. Those readings can then be used as reference when figuring out if capacitor's ESR is even close to what it should be.
