The Convention on Biological Diversity, an international treaty governing the movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology, is promoting discussions around the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The last topic consists of Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) and was implemented by the Nagoya Protocol in 2010, entering into force in 2014. The scope of this presentation will highlight the challenges of implementing legislation on Digital Sequence Information (DSI) as genetic resources, especially in developing countries; the threat this represents for developing synthetic biology and biotechnology; and the importance of iGEM teams to get more involved in policy.
